Charlie had chosen to attend Hazbin Community College, taking advantage of Lucifer's employee perk of free tuition, and they were supposed to spend her first ever fall break together. Instead, he'd been roped into flying halfway across the country to attend some dumb teaching conference with his asshole co-worker Alastor Boudreaux. Things couldn't possibly get any worse.

Lucifer starts to live at the hotel after the fight against Heaven, and he finds himself drinking late at night. But one night, Alastor joins him. After that, they start to find more and more things they have in common than they originally thought.
Professor Lucifer Morningstar, a scholar of American literature, treasured one book above all others. In his bleakest hours, that story had been his lifeline, reminding him that every soul is worthy of a second chance.
Its title was The Hazbin Hotel.
What Lucifer could not possibly have known, however, was that the man with whom he had—much against his will—recently become acquainted, a certain Alastor who delighted in belittling his favourite novel and his taste in literature, was in fact the very author of that book.
In a pragmatic attempt to spur Hell's infuriatingly ineffective king into doing something useful for a change, Alastor finds Lucifer becoming far more attached to him than he had intended and scrambles to deal with the consequences.
Lucifer is just trying to figure his shit out and not completely fuck things up with Charlie.
Alastor and Lucifer run into each other on their respective ways to get a drink after hours. Or, they 'run into' each other the first time, then look for each other the next few. Not that they'll tell each other that
After finally realizing and admitting their feelings for each other, Alastor and Lucifer have agreed to begin courting, but as their relationship progresses, Alastor starts to worry if he'll be able to give Lucifer everything a partner is supposed to give.
Unwilling to show any form of weakness, Alastor continues to push himself after the extermination nearly ends him, pain and desperation cutting his fuse shorter than ever. The only one stupid enough to approach him at those times is conveniently the only one he can't fight, but oblivious as the King is, he doesn't catch wise until the Radio Demon nearly crumbles at his feet.
That same obliviousness leaves him blissfully unaware what some of the other residents think is going on.
It's a well established fact that Lucifer and Alastor do not get along, that should they be left unsupervised for too long one or both will end up bloodied and maimed. So what is Alastor supposed to think when the King keeps seeking him out, that he's not planning to get rid of him? Obviously he needs to prove his importance to the hotel and gain his trust before that can happen.
