Throughout the quest to reclaim Erebor, Bilbo learned to deal with the many vexing behaviours of the Dwarves. One thing he could never adapt to, however, was their belief in superstition.
Being the only hobbit under the Lonely Mountain was fine until Bilbo realized it's been months since he felt grass under his feet. When he goes looking for sunshine, Thorin assumes the worst, and the Company is tired of putting up with their King and Burglar being oblivious idiots. Miscommunication and stargazing ensue!
An accident in the workshops is a serious setback in the rebuilding of Erebor. But it comes even worse for Thorin: It seems that Bilbo has been near the scene of the accident, but has now slipped away ... And what had he been doing in the workshops anyway, being all secretive? Thorin doesn't know that it has something to do with the mithril shirt.
“I have another idea,” he said slowly, fingers playing with the mithril draped across his chest. “Yes?” Gandalf prodded, grey brows knotting together. “In case he doesn’t –” Bilbo’s voice faded out and he toed the ground hesitantly. “What?” Thranduil asked, voice dripping with malice. “Continue, Halfling, or I will force the words out of you.” “Let him speak,” Bard cast the elf-king a side-eyed glance, before letting his gaze rest fully on the young hobbit. “What is it, Master Baggins? What is your plan should the Arkenstone fail to convince him?” Bilbo took a breath. Let it out. Took another and turned to Gandalf, cracking his knuckles nervously. “You’re not going to like it.” ~Bilbo offers himself as a part of the trade for the Arkenstone to sweeten the pot and get Thorin to agree to peace.
Thorin is unlikely to marry a dwarven princess now that Erebor is reclaimed, but that's because it's very unusual for a Crafter such as him to marry anyone at all. This causes Bilbo considerable consternation, for reasons he would rather not name.
Everyone, by a stroke of real luck, survived the Battle of Five Armies. Bilbo helps to rebuild Erebor, while waiting for Thorin to recover from his wounds. Hobbit help is, it seems, just what the dwarves need: after all, hobbits know better than any how to make a place into a home.
And when Thorin finally wakes up, there's a surprise waiting for Bilbo.
Bilbo tries his hand at match-making. What he doesn't expect is to find his perfect match in the process...
Bilbo is very popular amongst the people of Erebor - after all, he did save their city from a certain dragon. But this has gone too far. The very cheek of it... IN which Thorin is jealous of anyone and everyone and Bilbo doesn't even realise.
A chance purchase at the market reawakens Bilbo's love and skill of painting - he will sit for hours, happily mixing colours to his heart's content. And then the requests start coming for portraits, including from the one dwarf who makes Bilbo's heart skip a beat. If it means he gets to spend evenings in Thorin's company under the guise of a reference for his painting, who is Bilbo to refuse?
Dwalin never meant to show up in the library. It just sort of happened, but when he finds his best friend stalking a certain little burglar, Dwalin has never been happier to be in the library. And the fact that the most perfect little librarian works there with Bilbo just makes it better.
