Aziraphale lives a quiet kind of life, running a quiet specialist bookshop in one of the liveliest districts of London. He's content with his lot, happy with his friends, tolerant of his probably-human housemate, living vicariously through the gossip pages.
One day, a chance encounter with Anthony Crowley, lead singer of wildly successful rock band The Demons, threatens to turn his whole world upside down.
“I will pay back what I owe you. Somehow.”
“I knew you’d say that, but I have a proposal for you.” Crowley leaned back against one of the shelves again. “I have no need of money. But I am in need of someone who can keep me company, someone I trust.” He waited for Aziraphale to interject, but when he got no reaction, he continued. “I have to attend charity dinners and other events all the time and it’s, truth be told, excruciatingly boring.”
Aziraphale is drinking his sorrows away when his former friend Anthony Crowley randomly re-enters his life. Unasked and much to his chagrin, Crowley helps him out with a debt. As repayment, Crowley suggests an arrangement which Aziraphale reluctantly agrees to.
The intention is that they go as friends, but their emotions evolve along the way...
Seven years ago Aziraphale Device was persuaded out of accompanying his dearest friend to Egypt.
Now a famous explorer, Anthony Crowley is back in London and looking for a wife.
Aziraphale is determined to be happy for him, despite his own breaking heart.
