About the fandom
The Hobbit film trilogy is an adaptation of The Hobbit, a novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit films were produced after the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films and are considered a prequel trilogy. The Hobbit films were produced by the same people, use many of the same actors, and were filmed in the same locations as the Lord of the Rings films.
Bagginshield
Bagginshield is the non-canonical relationship between Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield from The Hobbit. It is the most popular ship in the fandom and the most popular slash ship in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings fandom.
In the first film Thorin and Bilbo don't necessarly get along, however with the hug at the end of the film the foundation of the ship were set. The second film then builds on the growing friendship between Thorin and Bilbo. Thorin is shown to care for Bilbo's opinion and Bilbo is shown to trust in Thorin. The third film was then the icing on the cake, so to speak. The acorn scene beautifully showed how Thorin is changed when he's with Bilbo and Thorin's death scene was both beautiful and emotional. Bilbo was visibly left shocked and grieved.
As Bagginshield canonically has no happy ending, many fanworks take place in an Alternate Universe where Thorin, Fili and Kili did not die and Bilbo decided to stay in Erebor.
